AR-based Inspection of Nuclear Power Plants


In order to improve the maintenance and decommissioning of nuclear power plants, workers needed an accurate and efficient way to see relevant information about pipes, pumps, and other equipment and hardware in the facility using augmented reality. Also needed is information about previous inspections and construction plans, as well as more critical and life-threatening alerts like radiation leaks.


We created an AR application workers use on mobile devices. They are connected to sensors in the power plant, revealing relevant information about various parts of the facility. In the end, we used small markers next to the hardware that would be worked on by maintenance personnel. In the future, with further development, this would be done by object detection. The users at the trade show used a large tablet to augment the hardware model, which was made up of pumps and pipes. When looking at a specific part, for example, a welding part, the user could click on a label and see additional information, such as the reports of previous inspections.
