Factory Indoor Localization

THE CHALLENGE

Most indoor localization systems require both custom-mounted hardware to cover a certain area, as well as mobile receivers, or tags. Cost increases with the area of the monitored location and the number of monitored parts – our customer was looking for a cost-efficient solution for this.

THE SOLUTION

We wanted to track small individual components in a factory – without introducing significant cost that scales with the size of the manufacturing plant and scope of the tracking needed. After testing several wireless positioning technologies including BLE, Wi-Fi, and UWB, the Wi-Fi fingerprint positioning system was found to be the best trade-off between precision, robustness and cost. The boxes can be located within a few meters of accuracy while having no need to deploy a complete radio infrastructure to power the system.
